Welcome to the Main Street Tupelo Project Blogsite

This blog site has been created to provide information about Downtown Tupelo Main Street Association's efforts to enhance and beautify Main Street, Tupelo, Mississippi. This effort began in 2008 to identify issues that need to be addressed for a healthier Downtown environment. These issues include pedestrian safety, traffic calming, beautification, consistency with Fairpark, and the need for more parking. Addressing these issues will help enhance the downtown experience and improve the marketability of downtown for economic purposes. In total, this project is aimed at the greater good of Tupelo, to bolster the prosperity of our longstanding downtown, strengthen our local economy and preserve the downtown space for the future.

About the project: The Downtown Enhancement Project consists of beautification and roadway enhancements proposed for the three block section of Main Street Tupelo between Front Street and Green Street. The enhancements include the following:

Beautification:
- Reworking Pedestrian Crosswalks and Ramps
- Replanting Street Trees
- Replacing Street Lights to match those in the Fairpark District
- Resurfacing and Repairing Sidewalks

Roadway:
- Adding On-Street Parallel Parking
- Adding a Bicycle Lane that also serves as a Pedestrian Safe Zone between oncoming traffic and parked cars
- Narrowing the street to a 3-Lane Road Section, reducing from four through lanes to two and creating a Center Turn Lane

Status: The Downtown Main Street Association is working with the City of Tupelo to apply for federal funding to implement this project.

Traffic Model of Existing Main Street Thoroughfare

This video is a computer generated model of existing Main Street Tupelo, as a four-lane section, provided courtesy of RPM Transportation Consultants. The model analyzes typical traffic movement along Main Street during peak traffic time (estimated at around 5:20 p.m.) Main Street currently handles an average of about 18,000 vehicles per day.

  1. I can't believe they would consider this. This make east main traffic awful! You don't need a city planner to know that. With money as tight as it is now, how can anyone justify this?
